Is the Eastern Algarve good for a golf trip with mates? Yes – it’s the quieter, classier end of the Algarve, built around Monte Rei (consistently rated Portugal’s number one course) plus Quinta da Ria, Cima and Quinta do Vale, all within a short drive of one another.

Where should a group base itself in the Eastern Algarve? Most groups stay near Tavira at the Praia Verde Boutique Hotel or in self-catering villas, with Monte Rei roughly 20-25 minutes away and the Quinta da Ria courses even closer.

How far is Monte Rei from Faro Airport? About an hour by road. We arrange a private group transfer so you go straight from arrivals to your first tee time without anyone touching a hire car.

You know the group chat. Someone floats “lads’ golf trip,” forty messages of nonsense follow, and then it goes quiet because nobody wants to actually book it. The Eastern Algarve is the answer to that stalemate: the same winter sun and easy flights everyone pictures, but the calmer, greener end of the coast – led by Monte Rei, with a handful of genuinely good courses clustered close by and none of the stag-do noise of the west.

Why the Eastern Algarve is the smart pick for a lads' trip

The Algarve everyone knows – Vilamoura, the buggies-and-bars strip – is busy, brash and frankly a bit much when all you want is good golf and good company. Drive east of Faro and it changes character entirely: the towns get prettier, the courses get quieter, and the headline act, Monte Rei Golf & Country Club, is in a different league. Jack Nicklaus designed it, it’s routinely named the best course in Portugal, and it plays like somewhere you’ve saved up for – because you have.

What makes it work for a group is how tight everything sits together. Quinta da Ria and its sister Cima share a clubhouse a short hop from Tavira, and Quinta do Vale – a David Sheriff course with serious elevation and views toward the Spanish border – is an easy drive too. You can play three or four genuinely different courses in a few days without ever sitting in a car for long.

And the weather does what you need it to. From November through March it’s reliable winter sun – mild, dry, ideal for golf – which is precisely when everyone at home is scraping frost off the windscreen.

The courses and the base we'd put your group on

We’d build the trip around Monte Rei as the marquee round – one you’ll talk about for years – then balance it with the variety nearby. Quinta da Ria runs out toward the Ria Formosa lagoon with sea views and a links-ish feel on the back nine; Cima next door is a touch more forgiving, parkland in character, a good first-day-legs round. Quinta do Vale brings the drama – undulating, scenic, the sort of course that sorts the group’s bragging rights out quickly.

For where you sleep, the Praia Verde Boutique Hotel near Tavira is our go-to for groups who want comfort without fuss – relaxed, smart, right by a quiet beach and pine forest, with easy reach of all four courses. If your group would rather spread out with its own space, kitchen and somewhere to pour a drink after the round, we can put you in a private villa instead.

Either way the principle is the same: a proper base you’re happy coming back to, courses good enough to justify the trip, and nobody having to negotiate a clubhouse queue at a megaresort.

How we make the admin disappear

The reason these trips stall is the organising – the tee times that don’t line up, the transfer nobody booked, the one mate who wants a single room. We handle all of it. You tell us roughly when, how many, and how seriously you take your handicaps, and we come back with a costed itinerary: rounds in a sensible order, the right base, and the days mapped so the golf flows.

Group logistics are where it pays to use a specialist. We negotiate group green-fee and accommodation rates, sort buggies and shared or single rooms to suit, and arrange a private transfer from Faro so no one’s stuck being designated driver. Tee-time bookings at Monte Rei in particular get tight in peak winter weeks, so the earlier we lock them, the better the slots.

One person becomes the point of contact with us, and the group chat goes back to being about windups instead of spreadsheets.

Booking it – and the protection that comes with it

Nothing’s off-the-shelf here. Every trip is tailor-made around your group, so the simplest start is a quick conversation – dates, numbers, the courses you’ve got your eye on – and we’ll shape the rest. There’s no obligation in getting a quote, and we’ll be straight with you about what’s worth the spend and what isn’t.

We arrange your ground side – hotel or villa, green fees, buggies, transfers – and if you want flights added, those are ATOL-protected, so your money and your trip are covered. You get a real specialist who has planned and played these courses, not a call centre reading off a screen.

When you’re ready, drop us a line with your rough dates and group size and we’ll put together a Monte Rei-led itinerary for the Eastern Algarve – the easy way to finally get that trip out of the group chat and onto a tee sheet.

Frequently asked questions

When's the best time to go for a golf trip to the Eastern Algarve?

November to March is the sweet spot – reliable winter sun, mild and dry, and the courses in good nick. It’s also the busiest window for tee times at Monte Rei, so book a few months ahead for the best slots; late spring and autumn are quieter and a touch cheaper.

How many can we bring, and can we mix single and shared rooms with buggies?

Groups of any size work, from a fourball up to a couple of dozen. We arrange single, twin or shared rooms to suit each person, and buggies and trolleys are easily added at each course – just tell us who wants what when we build the itinerary.

How do flights and transfers work?

You’ll fly into Faro, which has plenty of direct routes from the UK and Ireland. Monte Rei is about an hour away and the Tavira-area courses closer still; we arrange a private group transfer so no one has to drive, and if you’d like us to add flights they’re ATOL-protected.

What's included in the price?

Typically your accommodation (hotel or villa), green fees at your chosen courses, and private transfers – tailored to your group. Buggies, extra rounds and flights can all be added. We quote it transparently up front so you know exactly what’s covered before you commit.
