Each plays differently, and the transfers between them are short, which makes a five-round week easy to put together. Add a night or two near the medina, or stay out on the quiet Palmeraie, and you have a golf holiday with more character than almost anywhere else a three-and-a-half-hour flight from the UK.
Assoufid Golf Club — desert drama beneath the Atlas
Given a single round in Marrakech, Assoufid would be our pick. It runs through raw desert ground south of the city, all natural sand, scrub and genuine elevation change, with the Atlas filling the skyline on a clear morning. It plays a little like a links. The wind gets involved, the angles off the tee matter, and a lazy line is punished quickly.
And be under no illusion: there is almost no shade out there, so in July and August it can be a slog even off an early tee time. Come between October and May and it is a different course entirely. Better players will relish the precision it demands; higher handicaps will forgive their scorecard for the setting. For a base, the Fairmont Royal Palm is the natural fit;
Al Maaden & The Montgomerie — contemporary tests with real strategy
Al Maaden is the modern face of Marrakech golf, a parkland course built around big water features and large outdoor sculpture, with the mountains behind everything. It is fair. Wide enough to enjoy, but the lakes tighten several approach shots and the greens ask real questions. The Montgomerie Marrakech, Colin Montgomerie’s design near the Palmeraie, is the more tactical of the two, with clever bunkering and a handful of genuine risk-and-reward decisions. Given a straight choice we would pick The Montgomerie; it rewards a plotted round rather than a brave one, and that suits most travelling golfers.
