About Santana Golf
ABOUT THE COURSE
Santana Golf, Mijas, is a par 72 18 hole course set in a former avocado plantation. Surrounded by orange groves and avocado trees the Championship course was designed by Cabell B Robinson. The wide flat fairways feature strategically placed bunkers and water hazards. Each hole presents its own particular challenge. The fourth, for example, begins with spectacular views from the tees with a stream blocking a smooth run to the green. The eighth hole with a length of more than 658 yards from the back tees is possibly the longest hole on the Costa del Sol. If you grab a good score here, pat yourself on the back.

Our take
An old avocado plantation makes an unlikely home for golf, but Santana's wide, flat fairways and orange groves work far better than they have any right to.
- Higher handicapsA little over 70 metres of climb across the whole round, so everybody walks, and the fairways forgive a wayward driver. The stream guarding the green at the 4th is where most of the damage happens; lay up and take your medicine.
- SocietiesFlat walking and generous landing areas mean the whole group gets round with a card intact, which makes Santana a sensible first-day pick while everyone shakes the flight out of their swing.
- Serious golfersThe width can lull you into lazy lines, which is exactly what the bunkering is placed to catch. The 4th and the 8th have wrecked plenty of promising rounds between them, so plot both before you reach the tee.

The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 73 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 9 km/h, gusting to 36. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
