About Sable Solesmes Golf Club
ABOUT THE GOLF COURSE
Sable Solesmes Golf Club is a big golf club with 27 holes, impressive clubhouse and a high level of maintenance. Despite its remote location, it has hosted the Challenge Tour on several occasions. It’s sometimes rated as Michel Gayon’s best work and he’s designed many courses around the world.
With huge fairways, you might be tempted to blast away but the course is very subtle with plenty of traps. Experienced players will soon realise they need to plot their way around. The back nine has some spectacular holes and views. Sable Solesmes is a course where you could easily spend several days taking in the challenge and the setting and want to come back for more next year. A top-class act.

Our take
Gayon's best work by some reckonings, Sable Solesmes hides 27 Challenge Tour standard holes and a serious clubhouse deep in quiet countryside, and it is worth the detour from anywhere in the Loire.
- Serious golfersThe huge fairways are a trap in themselves; blast away and the subtlety picks your card apart. On the La Foret nine it is the 3rd and 6th that do the damage, Challenge Tour pedigree showing through.
- Higher handicapsKinder than its tour history suggests, because those wide fairways mean you rarely lose a ball off the tee. The examination is in the traps and around the greens, so arrive with a sharp short game.
- SocietiesTwenty-seven holes lets a group rotate loops over two days without repeating a hole, and the clubhouse is built for numbers. Around 100 metres of climb each round, so most golfers will still walk it comfortably.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Moderate. 108 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 13 km/h, gusting to 40. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 18 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Michel Gayon.
The holes that will cost you. The , the and the . The is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
