About Royal Zoute Golf Club
Royal Zoute Golf Club is undoubtedly one of the best links courses in continental Europe, and was designed by the great Harry Colt. Built over a hundred years ago, the course at first does not look too tough. But, when the wind picks up, hitting the fairways is paramount and negotiating the fast greens is another story. The course meanders through dunes and silver birches and has earned tributes from the likes of Palmer and Faldo. 13 miles north of Bruges.

Our take
If you play one course from a Bruges base, make it Royal Zoute; Harry Colt's hundred-year-old links through the dunes and silver birches drew tributes from Palmer and Faldo, and it still earns them.
- Serious golfersThe scorecard looks gettable on a still morning; then the sea breeze arrives and hitting fairways becomes the entire game. Colt's quick greens finish the job, so take an extra club and manage your expectations.
- Higher handicapsPlayable, because it is flat and you can run the ball in along the ground, but a windy afternoon here will find every weakness. Book an early tee time and take the calmest day of your trip.
- Buddy tripsThis is the round the whole trip gets built around, thirteen miles from your Bruges hotel. Play it mid-trip so nobody peaks too early, and let the wind set the handicap allowances.

What you are actually facing
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 50. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 10 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Harry Colt.
