What golfers say about Spain
4.997 reviewsIf you are going to play golf, there's nothing better than playing in the sunshine so my wife and I had an item on our bucket list to take a month driving around the Iberian peninsula playing golf, staying at good hotels and eating well! …
We recently used Golf planet Holidays for our annual golf trip to Spain, I can honestly say that the service provided was second to none, an absolutely first class experience.. well done the team at Golf planet holidays..
About Rio Real Golf Course
Rio Real is one of Marbella's classic golf courses. There are wonderful views from the elevated tees and The River Real crosses the course at several points. The much-respected Javier Arana designed the course back in 1965 and Rio Real is highly rated in Spain. This is a course to savour.

Our take
Javier Arana designed Rio Real back in 1965 and it still plays like the Marbella classic it is, the river crossing the round in several places and the 13th and 16th deciding most matches.
- Serious golfersAn Arana design with no tricks in it, just proper golf. The river keeps every approach honest, and the 13th and 16th have ruined plenty of good cards within sight of the clubhouse.
- CouplesThe on-site hotel makes this one of the easiest golf stays in Marbella. Roll out of bed onto the 1st tee, take in the views from the elevated tees, and there is rarely enough wind to spoil an afternoon round.
- Solo golfersA well run classic where a single golfer slots in easily, and staying at the on-site hotel removes the transfer question entirely. It walks fine with a trolley; the slopes are steady rather than steep.
Tell us who’s coming and how you like to play, and we’ll shape the right trip around you.
What you are actually facing
The walk. Moderate. 161 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 7 km/h, gusting to 30. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 7 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Javier Arana.
The holes that will cost you. The 16th, the 13th and the 7th. The 7th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
