About Le Vaudreuil Golf Club
Home to the French PGA, Le Vaudreuil Golf Club, just outside Rouen, in Normandy looks a picture as you drive through the gates. The first thing you see is the magnificent thatched 17th century Norman clubhouse and the surrounding holes. It's a simpler layout than Champ de Bataille, the fairways here allow for aggressive drives but the greens are small and well-defended. But like Champ de Bataille it is considered one of the prettiest courses in France.
Le Vaudreuil is very flat, with lots of trees, and the course has been lengthened to almost 7000 yards to up the challenge. We like it – not least for the great food and relaxed atmosphere.

Our take
The French PGA makes its home at Le Vaudreuil, and it looks a picture from the moment the thatched 17th-century clubhouse appears through the gates.
- Serious golfersSeven thousand yards of Fred Hawtree parkland where you can attack from the tee, because the true examination is the small, well-defended greens. The 8th and 15th are where most cards come unstuck, and water waits on ten holes.
- Higher handicapsOff the full tees the length is relentless, so move forward and enjoy the generous driving lines. The walk is as easy as golf gets, barely 11 metres of climb in the whole round.
- CouplesConsidered one of the prettiest courses in France, and the thatched Norman clubhouse sets the tone from the gates. Rouen is close by for the evening, so the non-golf half of the day looks after itself.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 11 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 11 km/h, gusting to 35. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 10 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Fred Hawtree.
The holes that will cost you. The 8th, the 15th and the 18th. The 15th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
