The land does the talking here. Across eighteen holes you climb 243 metres in total, so the round rises and falls under your feet the whole way. That is not flat parkland. The prevailing wind comes off the west, in from the Atlantic, and it sets the tone for club selection on most holes. Water comes into play on nine of them. Set on the Basque coast above Biarritz, the course asks you to read slope and breeze together rather than one at a time.
The closing hole is the one people remember. The 18th plays like a long par five, uphill all the way to the green, and into that westerly wind. Both of those things stretch it. Club up, because it will play longer than the number on the card suggests, and treat it as a genuine three-shot hole. Position over power. A drive into the right half of the fairway, then a second that leaves a full wedge, and you have a fair go at a closing par. Get greedy, and the slope plus the wind will punish a half-struck long iron.
The 12th is cut from similar cloth, another uphill par five, but here the wind is at your back. Downwind takes some of the sting out of the climb, so you can flight your second a touch lower and let it run on. Even then it rewards placing the ball rather than hammering it. Three sensible shots beat two big swings and a scramble.
Then there is the 2nd, the round’s early test. Uphill again, into the wind again, yet the data reads it as reachable in two for the longer hitter. If you have the carry and you have committed to it, go for it. The reward is there early in the card. If you are between clubs, or the breeze is up, lay back and wedge on. No shame in a steady five so soon.

| Hole | Par | Plays | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | around 5 | Uphill, into the wind | Reachable in two if you back yourself, otherwise lay up and wedge on |
| 12 | around 5 | Uphill, downwind | The wind helps the climb; place the second shot, don’t force it |
| 18 | around 5 | Uphill, into the wind | Club up, play it as three shots, position over power |
This is a course for golfers who enjoy thinking their way round. The constant change in elevation means you are rarely on a flat lie, and the wind off the Atlantic asks you to commit to a club and trust it. Lower handicaps will relish the strategy on the par fives, where the right side of the fairway and a clear head matter more than raw length. Higher handicaps can still score well by playing within themselves and using the downwind holes to claw shots back.
On walkability, be honest with yourself. The measured climb is 243 metres over eighteen holes, and the ground stays hilly from the first tee to the last. A buggy is advised, and most visitors take one. If you would rather not haul a trolley up the slopes in the afternoon, book the buggy when you book the round and save your legs for the golf.
For timing, the Basque coast is at its kindest from late spring into early autumn. May, June and September tend to give you warm, settled days without the peak-summer crowds. July and August get busier and can be hot. The shoulder months either side carry more chance of Atlantic rain rolling in on that westerly, so pack a layer if you are travelling then.
The climbs are real. With 243 metres of ascent and hilly ground throughout, this is a tiring walk, and several of the longer holes drag uphill into the prevailing wind at exactly the point your legs start to feel it. If your idea of a good day is a flat, gentle stroll, this will test that. A buggy moves from a nice extra to a sensible call, especially in the heat of the afternoon. Plan your energy across the round and you will enjoy it far more on the closing stretch.
