Golf in French Riviera or Costa Del Sol? An Honest Comparison

Two stretches of Mediterranean coast, two very different golfing souls. The French Riviera and the Costa del Sol both promise sunshine, sea views and a glass of something cold after the eighteenth — yet the trips they make are not the same, and choosing well is the difference between a good week and an unforgettable one.
We’ve sent golfers to both for more than forty years, and we won’t pretend one is universally better. The honest answer depends on you: how much golf you want, the season you can travel, and whether you’re chasing a buzzing buddies week or a slower, more romantic escape. Here is the even-handed comparison — and a clear sense of who each coast is for.
The golf and the courses: density versus drama
If your measure of a golf trip is choice and rounds, the Costa del Sol is the more generous host. Andalucía’s golf coast packs a remarkable concentration of courses into a short drive, so a week can comfortably take in several without long transfers — from the polished fairways around Marbella at La Quinta Golf and Country Club to the championship pedigree of Sotogrande, where Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol and the stylish SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort make natural bases. It is golf with momentum: play, lunch, play again.
The French Riviera plays a different hand. There are fewer courses, but they are set with real theatre into the wooded hills behind Cannes — and the standard at the top is exceptional. Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort at Tourrettes is among the finest resorts in southern Europe; Royal Mougins Golf Resort and Domaine de Saint Endreol Golf & Spa Resort at Le Muy offer dramatic, sculpted golf with the scent of pine and the Esterel as a backdrop. You’ll likely play fewer rounds here — but you’ll remember each one.
Season and weather: when you travel decides a lot
This is where the two coasts genuinely diverge. The Costa del Sol’s sheltered microclimate gives it warm, playable winters, which is why it remains Europe’s go-to for golf from October through March. If your window is winter and you want near-guaranteed sun, Andalucía is the pragmatic, honest choice.
The French Riviera is at its most beguiling from spring through autumn, when the light turns the hills gold and the courses are in immaculate condition. Winters are cooler and the season shorter, so it rewards the golfer who can travel in the kinder months. Put simply: for a December escape, lean Costa del Sol; for a glorious May or September trip with scenery to match, the Côte d’Azur is unrivalled.

Atmosphere and where you'll stay
Off the course, the contrast is just as clear. The Costa del Sol is sociable and easy-going — long evenings around Puerto Banús and Marbella, a wide spread of hotels from the lively Hard Rock Hotel Marbella to the beachfront Amare Beach Hotel and the well-placed Barceló Occidental Banús. It’s a coast that suits groups who want energy after dark and an effortless rhythm to the days.
The Riviera is more refined, more grown-up. Base yourself in Cannes at the InterContinental Carlton, Majestic Barrière or Le Gray d’Albion Barrière and you trade golf-resort convenience for Croisette glamour, Michelin tables and the option of a non-golfing partner who is perfectly happy. Or retreat inland to Le Mas Candille at Mougins or Najeti Golf Hotel de Valescure for quiet, leafy Provençal calm. It is the more romantic, slower-paced week of the two.
So which should you choose?
Choose the Costa del Sol if you want volume and variety: a buddies trip with several rounds, a generous choice of courses around Marbella and Sotogrande, warm winter golf and lively evenings. Choose the French Riviera if you value a sense of place over sheer numbers — fewer but standout rounds at the likes of Terre Blanche and Royal Mougins, elegant hotels, and a trip a couple or a discerning group will savour as much off the course as on it.
The good news is that neither choice is one you have to make alone. We plan tailor-made trips to both coasts, matching courses, hotels, transfers and timing to exactly the week you have in mind — French Riviera from £495 per person, Costa del Sol from £185 per person, each the accessible start of a trip built entirely around you.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Costa del Sol or the French Riviera cheaper for golf?
The Costa del Sol is the more accessible of the two, with tailor-made trips from £185 per person, while the French Riviera starts from £495 per person — a reflection of its more exclusive hotels and resort courses. Both figures are simply the starting point; we build each trip to your chosen courses, hotels and dates, so the final shape is entirely yours.
Which has more golf courses to choose from?
The Costa del Sol has the greater density, with many courses within a short drive around Marbella and Sotogrande — ideal if you want several rounds in a week. The French Riviera offers fewer courses but exceptional ones, such as Terre Blanche and Royal Mougins, set dramatically in the hills behind Cannes.
Can I bring a non-golfing partner to either destination?
Both suit a mixed party beautifully. On the Riviera, a base in Cannes at the InterContinental Carlton or Majestic Barrière offers the Croisette, spas and fine dining; on the Costa del Sol, Marbella and Puerto Banús pair beaches and shopping with easy golf. We tailor each itinerary so golfers and non-golfers alike have a wonderful week.
