The Jubilee at St Andrews is arguably the most challenging of all the courses here, and there are some tough contenders. It's a traditional single stretch links layout. The driving on this course is the most difficult part as you can't afford to land in the numerous bunkers or finish on a sloping lie. A first-class test of golf.

- Serious golfersA first-class examination and arguably the hardest round in town; keep the driver straight or you are in a bunker or on a sloping lie, and the 5th and 14th give nothing back.
- Higher handicapsAnyone above about 18 should pack patience and spare balls; it is a flat walk, but water turns up far more often than you expect on a links, and the bunkering off the tee punishes a crooked driver all day.
- Buddy tripsSave it for the day the group wants a decider; a traditional single stretch of links, out and back, and the shared clubhouse afterwards is the right place to argue about it.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 26 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 55. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 10 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Original 12-hole layout by Old Tom Morris, expanded to 18 in 1905.
The holes that will cost you. The 5th, the 14th and the 9th. The 5th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
