ABOUT THE GOLF COURSE
The Castle course is a brilliant design by David McLay Kidd. Built in 2008 it was the seventh course at the home of golf. The Castle course looks as if it’s been there a hundred years and it’s a stunning challenge from start to finish.
- Caddies
- Trolleys
- Buggies for over 65s with medical certificate
- Shared clubhouse
Our take
Youngest of the seven St Andrews courses, the Castle looks as though it has stood for a century and plays like it wants your full attention from the first tee.
- Serious golfersDavid McLay Kidd built a challenge that never lets up, and the wind gets a full say on this links. Take a caddie the first time out; local knowledge earns its fee here.
- Higher handicapsKidd did not design it to flatter anyone, and buggies only go to over 65s with a medical certificate, so it is a trolley and a stiff examination. Come for the experience rather than the score.
- Buddy tripsSlot it into a St Andrews week as the modern counterpoint to the old links; it looks a hundred years old but asks very current questions of everyone's game.

What you are actually facing
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 55. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The design. David McLay Kidd.
