Our take
Open final qualifying comes to Scotscraig for a reason: this Braid mix of heath and links asks proper questions without wearing you out.
- Serious golfersBraid's unusual marriage of heathland and links gives you gorse lines and running ground in the same round. The 9th and 14th are where good cards come unstuck, so plan those tee shots on the practice ground.
- Higher handicapsBarely 40 metres of climb across the whole round means tired legs are no excuse, and away from the two card-wreckers there is room to get a score going.
- SocietiesThe 13th oldest club in the world sits close to both St Andrews and Carnoustie, so it slots into any Fife itinerary. Caddies must be booked ahead rather than picked up on the day.
Tell us who’s coming and how you like to play, and we’ll shape the right trip around you.
What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 39 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 54. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 5 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. James Braid.
The holes that will cost you. The 14th, the 9th and the 16th. The 14th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
