About The San Roque Club
The San Roque Club is one of Spain's most exclusive venues. The course has changed over the years with bark chippings lining many of the fairways to provide a more enjoyable round for most golfers. The renowned 18 hole Championship courses was designed by Dave Thomas, with bunkers redeveloped by Seve Ballesteros. It presents a fair challenge with immaculate fairways, well-defended greens and water hazards. There is limited availability to non-members.
- Buggies
- Trolleys
- Clubhouse - restaurant and bar
- Excellent practice facilities
Our take
Few visiting golfers get onto San Roque, which is precisely why it belongs on a Costa del Sol itinerary when we can secure the tee time.
- Serious golfersThe opening hole is the hardest on the course, so arrive warmed up rather than straight from the car park. Immaculate parkland, well-defended greens, Seve's rebuilt bunkering, and the 14th ready to undo a good back nine.
- Buddy tripsThis is the exclusive round of a Costa del Sol week, the one the group still mentions a year later. Visitor access is limited, so tell us early and we will plan the rest of the trip around it.
- Higher handicapsFairer than the private-club billing suggests. Bark chippings along many fairways mean a wayward drive is usually found and played rather than lost, and with a decent amount of climb in the round most groups take buggies.
Tell us who’s coming and how you like to play, and we’ll shape the right trip around you.
What you are actually facing
The walk. Moderate. 153 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually easterly, averaging 12 km/h, gusting to 32. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 9 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Dave Thomas.
The holes that will cost you. The 1st, the 14th and the 8th. The 4th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
