Royal Troon Golf Club is home to two 18 hole courses with the Old Course one of the great links courses in Scotland. It's a challenging test of golfing ability. With the wind and deep rough interspersed with gorse and broom, accurate shot making is essential. Players should make their scores on the outward nine, as the prevailing north-westerly wind can make the back nine extremely difficult.
The Portland course is shorter and a challenge in its own right. With its mix of par 3s and par 5s, tough gorse, ditches and cleverly positioned bunkers it merits a game.

Our take
An Open venue that gives you your chances going out, then turns you into the prevailing north-westerly and asks you to hang on all the way home.
- Serious golfersBank your score on the front nine, though the 4th and 6th will test that plan early. Once you turn, the wind and the deep rough between the gorse make every par feel earned.
- Higher handicapsBe honest about what you are in for. The rough is deep, the gorse eats anything wild, and the back nine into the wind can be brutal on a card. The shorter Portland course makes a kinder second day.
- Buddy tripsFlat underfoot and entirely walkable, so nobody needs a buggy, and with two courses on site you can pair the Old with the Portland and settle the arguments over 36 holes.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 38 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 62. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 3 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
