Our take
Royal St David's sits under the brooding walls of Harlech Castle and plays far harder than its modest par suggests.
- Serious golfersA par 69 with the teeth of a par 72. Water and ditches thread through the whole round, the greens run fast and true, and the 7th and 8th are where good cards go to die.
- Higher handicapsTake plenty of golf balls; the ditches crossing these fairways collect anything mishit, and the two-shotters play long into the wind. Mercifully it is an easy walk, barely 30 metres of climb all day.
- Buddy tripsHarlech Castle looming over the links gives the round a sense of occasion no photograph does justice to, and the flat walking keeps everyone fresh enough to argue about the scores afterwards.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 28 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 14 km/h, gusting to 49. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 21 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The holes that will cost you. The 7th, the 8th and the 13th. The 7th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
