Royal Portrush Golf Course: your questions answered

Is Royal Portrush worth playing?

Yes, if championship links golf is the point of your trip. An Open Championship venue founded in 1888, it has two Championship Courses, the renowned Dunluce and the Valley, set among huge sand dunes above the Antrim Coast with views towards Scotland and Donegal. It suits serious golfers over resort-first travellers; it is a club, not a resort, so your specialist builds it into a wider stay with transfers arranged.

What is the difference between the Dunluce and Valley courses?

Royal Portrush has two Championship Courses. The Dunluce is the renowned course most visiting golfers come for; the Valley is the smaller of the two but equally enjoyable, and a sensible second round on a longer stay. Both are set among huge sand dunes gently raised above the Antrim Coast, with vistas of sea, cliffs and islands and views across the North Atlantic towards Scotland and Donegal.

Has Royal Portrush hosted The Open?

Yes, Royal Portrush is an Open Championship venue. The club dates from 1888 and the course was reshaped by Martin Ebert in 2015. If Portrush is on your wish list, tell your Golf Planet Holidays specialist early; securing hard-to-get tee times is part of what they do, alongside transfers between your hotel and the course.

Who designed Royal Portrush?

H. S. Colt designed Royal Portrush, and Martin Ebert carried out a redesign in 2015, so the course you play today blends the two. It is an 18-hole, par 72 links with greens scattered among huge sand dunes gently raised above the coast. The club was founded in 1888, giving it well over a century of history behind the current layout.
