About Prestwick Golf Club
Prestwick Golf Club is famous for its testing links course. Just half an hour from Glasgow, Prestwick has played previous host to The Open Championship as well as The Amateur Championship with one of its great strengths being the course bunkering. Hell's Bunker could cause a few problems should you end up against the railway sleepers! You feel the history and nostalgia about the place where Willie Park won the inaugural Open Championship in 1860.
- Buggies - Not available
- Trolleys - Caddies and Electric trollies can be booked for you.
- Clubhouse - many clubs are based here, the most famous being Prestwick St Nicholas, all in their own clubhouses on the gravel road by the first tee.
Our take
Few clubs carry the game's history like Prestwick, where the first Open was decided in 1860 and the sleepered bunkers still settle most arguments.
- Serious golfersThere is no water anywhere, which tells you where the defence lies: the bunkering. Get behind the railway sleepers in Hell's Bunker and the hole is gone. The 3rd and the 12th are where good rounds tend to stall.
- Higher handicapsYou will lose shots to the bunkers, everyone does, so take your medicine and play out sideways. The walk itself is gentle, under 50 metres of climb, and the sense of playing through history carries you round.
- Buddy tripsHalf an hour from Glasgow, so it works as the opening round of an Ayrshire trip, and the clubhouse, where the Open began, gives the group its story for the bar.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 49 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 60. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The design. Old Tom Morris.
The holes that will cost you. The 12th, the 3rd and the 7th. The 7th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
Hole by hole — how we would play it
