Our take
A shotmaker's links among old Scots pines and sandhills, Panmure is tight off the tee and tighter still into its compact, undulating greens.
- Serious golfersPlay it in the same week as Carnoustie and you will not feel short-changed. Water crosses the round again and again, and the 2nd and the 8th are where good cards quietly come apart.
- Higher handicapsBring spare balls. The fairways are tight, the carries are real and water turns up far more often than you would guess from the first tee. At least it is a flat, easy walk between the trouble.
- SocietiesThe clubhouse is one of the finest old golf buildings in Scotland, and its lounges are exactly where a society wants to settle once the match has been argued over. Visiting golfers from home and abroad hold it in real regard.
Tell us who’s coming and how you like to play, and we’ll shape the right trip around you.
What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 31 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 54. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 16 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Old Tom Morris, refined by James Braid (1922).
The holes that will cost you. The 8th, the 2nd and the 18th. The 8th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
Hole by hole — how we would play it
