About Lacanau Golf Club
Play and stay at Lacanau Golf Club, one of our favourite finds in the Bordeaux region. The golf course is carved out of a pine forest with the Atlantic Ocean roaring away in the distance. It's straightforward but demanding and very, very pretty.
Measuring 6500 yards off the back with a tough par of 72, the par threes are generally the toughest to keep a bogey away and the par fives are where you can grab a shot back. The par fours are generally quite tight or require a proper two shot strategy instead of just bashing your driver and hoping for the best.
The maintenance of Lacanau is now very good and we recommend at least one round here if you're staying in Bordeaux or westwards.
Talking of staying, we recommend the four-star Hotel du Golf nestling by the 18th green.

Our take
One of our favourite finds in the Bordeaux region, Lacanau is simple enough to plot your way round yet harder to score on than 6,500 yards would ever suggest.
- Serious golfersThe par threes are the backbone, the hardest holes to keep a bogey off the card, while the par fives hand shots back. The 9th and 17th are where rounds usually come unstuck.
- Higher handicapsA flat, kind walk, barely 55 metres of climb all round, with the Atlantic rumbling somewhere beyond the pines. Keep the ball in play and the forest leaves you alone; stray and it will not.
- CouplesCarved through pine forest near the coast and genuinely lovely to walk, with only 6,500 yards to cover. A relaxed day's golf in a pretty setting rather than an endurance event.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 55 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 12 km/h, gusting to 50. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 4 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. John Harris.
The holes that will cost you. The 17th, the 9th and the 13th. The 9th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
