Our take
Co-hosting alongside the Old Course and Carnoustie every year tells you where Kingsbarns stands; Kyle Phillips built a modern links that earned its Top 100 ranking honestly.
- Serious golfersNearly every hole plays against the North Sea and the wind makes full use of that. The 12th and the 16th are the round-wreckers; walk off either with par and you have played properly.
- Higher handicapsFor all the reputation it is a flat, friendly walk, under 60 metres of climb all day. Into the sea breeze take one club more than you believe and your score will thank you.
- CouplesA day out as much as a round: the handshake from the starter on the first tee, sea views on nearly every hole, and a pace that suits savouring it.
Tell us who’s coming and how you like to play, and we’ll shape the right trip around you.
What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 58 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 15 km/h, gusting to 55. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 8 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Kyle Phillips.
The holes that will cost you. The 12th, the 16th and the 9th. The 12th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
