On the coast on the way up to the heart of East Lothian, Dunbar is well worth a stop. It's a great warm-up course to get used to links golf before you play the beasts of North Berwick, Archerfield and Gullane! Dunbar has all the ingredients and stunning scenery but a little less of the bite. Lovely clubhouse set over a Par 3 and closing hole overlooking the ocean.
- Links golf
- Buggies - Available provided booked in advance, we can do this for you.

- Clubhouse - Visitors welcome with full restaurant and bar facilities available
Our take
Play Dunbar first on an East Lothian trip: all the links ingredients with less bite than the famous names up the coast.
- Serious golfersDo not coast through the start; the 1st and 2nd are the holes most likely to wreck a card here, and the sea wind blows harder along this stretch than most visitors allow for. Take an extra club early.
- Higher handicapsThe flattest walk on this coast, barely 16 metres of climb in 18 holes, and gentler scoring than Gullane or North Berwick. Buggies are available if booked ahead, and we can arrange that for you.
- Buddy tripsThe natural opening round of an East Lothian week before the bigger names, with a clubhouse set above a par 3 and a closing hole by the ocean for the first night's debrief.

What you are actually facing
The walk. Flat, and an easy walk — 16 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually westerly, averaging 17 km/h, gusting to 59. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 5 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. Old Tom Morris (later revised by Ben Sayers and James Braid).
The holes that will cost you. The 2nd, the 1st and the 18th. The 2nd is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
