When a week of links golf starts to grind, Downfield is the James Braid parkland that resets you, laid out through old woodland just north-west of Dundee.

• Buddy tripsSlot it in between the seaside rounds. It is dead flat, the trees take the edge off the wind, and the clubhouse restaurant and bar handle the aftermath. Buggies and trolleys are there if anyone is flagging.
• Higher handicapsNo burns, no forced carries and not a metre of climb, but woodland with over a hundred species of tree will punish a crooked driver. Hit whatever club finds the fairway and you will score.
• Serious golfersDo not write it off as the rest day. Braid built a par 73 here where accuracy is the whole question, and it asks it differently from the links up the road at Carnoustie and St Andrews.
