Our take
Tour golf was played at Dalmahoy for years, and the East Course still opens with a hole that means business.
- Serious golfersJames Braid laid it out in 1927 and the European Seniors Tour still visits, so the pedigree is real; the 1st and the 10th are the hardest holes on the card, one opening each nine.
- Higher handicapsIt is a championship par 72 but a fair one; the slopes are moderate, around 90 metres of climb across the round, and nothing here sets out to embarrass you.
- SocietiesTwo courses and a country club hotel on one estate make the logistics simple, and being inland it is noticeably more sheltered than the coast when the wind gets up.
Tell us who’s coming and how you like to play, and we’ll shape the right trip around you.
What you are actually facing
The walk. Moderate. 92 metres of climb over the round.
The wind. The wind is usually south-westerly, averaging 14 km/h, gusting to 50. It is the club selection that catches people out, not the yardage.
The water. 2 hazards in play. Bring a few more balls than you think you need.
The design. James Braid.
The holes that will cost you. The 10th, the 1st and the 11th. The 10th is the one you will be talking about afterwards.
