Cape Kaliakra golf holidays

Three clifftop courses above the Black Sea: Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama, Lighthouse

7 hotels · 3 courses · from £350pp · ATOL Protected

Cape Kaliakra is one of golf's great undiscovered corners — a sweep of limestone cliffs on Bulgaria's northern Black Sea coast where three serious resort courses sit within a short drive of one another. This is dramatic, sea-girt golf: fairways that tumble toward the water, big skies and a coastline that rewards the long view. The nearby city of Varna gives the trip its arrival point and a touch of Black Sea life, while the cape itself stays quiet, green and unhurried. For the golfer who has done the familiar circuits and wants somewhere genuinely different, Cape Kaliakra delivers scenery and shot-making in equal measure.

We have arranged Bulgaria golf since 1981. Every itinerary is hand-built and hand-priced around your dates, your group and the courses you want to play.

Why play golf in Cape Kaliakra

  • Three distinct championship-standard courses — Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama and Lighthouse — all clustered around Cape Kaliakra
  • Cliff-top and coastal golf with some of the most photographed sea views in European golf
  • A compact destination: the courses are close enough to combine across a single trip
  • A quiet, uncrowded feel — tee times are easy to come by compared with the Mediterranean's busiest resorts
  • On-site resort stays at the courses themselves, plus a city option in Varna for a change of pace
  • Somewhere your group almost certainly hasn't played — a real talking point

The courses you’ll play

The three courses on the cape each have their own character. Thracian Cliffs Golf Course is the headline act — a spectacular layout carved into the cliffs above the Black Sea, with holes that play along and over the water's edge. BlackSeaRama Golf Course sits a little inland of the cliff line, a rolling, generously framed course with the sea as a constant backdrop. Lighthouse Golf Course completes the trio, a coastal layout running across open, breezy ground toward the shore. Played across a few days, the three give you genuine variety — cliff drama, rolling parkland-by-the-sea, and exposed, links-like ground — within a single, easily managed destination.

Where you’ll stay

Each of the cape's courses has its own resort, so you can stay at the golf or base yourself in the city. Thracian Cliffs Golf Resort & Spa and BlackSeaRama Golf & Villas put you right on the courses of the same name, ideal for a golf-first trip where the first tee is a short walk or buggy ride away. Lighthouse Golf & Spa Resort offers the same on-site convenience at the Lighthouse course. For those who want a city base with restaurants and seafront on the doorstep, the Melia Grand Hermitage Hotel in Varna is a comfortable option, with the courses a drive up the coast. We match the base to how you like to travel — golf on the doorstep, or a city to come back to.

Best time to play golf in Cape Kaliakra

Cape Kaliakra is a summer game. The Black Sea coast comes into its own from roughly May to September, when the days are long, warm and reliably dry — the sweet spot for golf here. Late spring and early autumn (May–June and September) are particularly pleasant: comfortable temperatures, settled conditions and the coast at its greenest, without the full heat of high summer. July and August are warm and busy along the wider coastline, which makes the relative calm of the cape's courses all the more welcome. Winters here are cool and often wet, and the courses are not a winter-sun destination — this is firmly a spring-to-autumn trip, which is exactly when the cliffs and sea look their best.

A sense of Cape Kaliakra

History & heritage

Cape Kaliakra carries real history. The long, narrow headland was a fortified Thracian and later medieval stronghold, and its name and legends are woven into Bulgaria's national story — the cape gives this whole stretch of coast, and the Thracian Cliffs course, their sense of place. Nearby Varna is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with roots reaching back millennia and a reputation as Bulgaria's maritime capital. Between rounds there is genuine depth to explore: ancient sites, a strong Black Sea seafaring tradition, and a culture that feels distinct from the better-known Mediterranean golf destinations. It all adds up to a trip with more than golf to talk about.

Food & wine

Bulgarian cooking is hearty, fresh and built around the garden and the grill — think generous salads, grilled meats and the country's famous yoghurt and white cheeses. The Black Sea coast adds seafood to the table, and Varna in particular has a lively dining scene along the seafront. Bulgaria is also a serious and underrated wine country, with a long viticultural history and characterful local grapes well worth seeking out over dinner. Staying at the cape's resorts you'll dine well on site, while a base such as the Melia Grand Hermitage in Varna puts the city's restaurants within easy reach — a good way to round off a day on the cliffs.

Beyond the fairways

There is plenty to fill the non-golf hours. Cape Kaliakra itself is worth walking for the views, the fortress remains and the sheer drama of the headland. Varna offers a proper city day — seafront promenade, gardens, museums and shopping — while the wider northern coast has quiet beaches and coves for those who want to slow down. The resorts add their own spas for an afternoon off the legs, and the relaxed pace of this part of Bulgaria makes it easy to mix a round with a long lunch and an unhurried look around. It suits groups with a range of appetites for golf.

Getting around & exploring

Cape Kaliakra is best explored by car. The three courses — Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama and Lighthouse — sit close together on and around the cape, with Varna a comfortable drive to the south, so a hire car gives you the freedom to combine courses, the cape and the city at your own pace. Distances are short and the roads are quiet by Mediterranean standards. If you'd rather not drive, we can arrange private transfers between your hotel and each course, and to and from the airport — a tidy option for a group who'd rather leave the logistics to us and concentrate on the golf.

Getting there

The gateway is Varna, the main city and airport for Bulgaria's northern Black Sea coast, with the cape's courses a straightforward drive up the coastline from there. Golf Planet Holidays arranges your trip on a ground-only basis — your accommodation, golf, tee times and transfers all hand-built around your dates. Flights are a separate, optional ATOL-protected add-on we can arrange for you, or you're welcome to book them yourself. Either way, we'll make sure the on-the-ground arrangements line up neatly with your travel, so arrival and transfers to the cape are seamless.

Good to know

  • Bulgaria is not in the eurozone — the local currency is the Bulgarian lev; cards are widely accepted at the resorts
  • This is a spring-to-autumn destination (roughly May–September); winters are cool and wet and not suited to golf
  • The courses are clifftop and coastal, so the sea breeze can be a factor — pack accordingly
  • A hire car is the easiest way to combine the three courses and Varna; private transfers are available if you'd prefer
  • We are ATOL and PTS protected and IATA accredited; flights, when you want them, are an optional ATOL-protected add-on (we are not ABTA members)
  • Every Cape Kaliakra itinerary is hand-picked, hand-built and hand-priced — tell us your dates, your group and the courses you want, and we'll do the rest

Frequently asked questions

Golf holidays in Cape Kaliakra — answers to the questions our golfers ask most.

It is easy to get around in Bulgaria?

We recommend arranging private transfers for your golf course visits, which we include in all Bulgaria packages. This is the most convenient option and avoids any logistical uncertainty. Taxis are widely available and very affordable by UK standards. If you prefer independence, hire cars are available at Varna and Sofia airports. Most of Bulgaria's top golf courses — Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama and Cape Kaliakra — are within 20–30 minutes of each other on the Black Sea coast, making logistics simple.

Is Bulgaria good for groups?

Bulgaria offers outstanding value for golf groups and societies. Green fees at world-class courses like Thracian Cliffs are significantly lower than comparable venues in Western Europe. All-inclusive hotel options keep the group together with costs predictable and no bill-splitting. Three excellent courses in close proximity mean you can play a different course each day without long drives. The uncrowded nature of Bulgarian golf also means better availability than busier destinations. Contact us for competitive group rates and tailored society packages.

Where should I play golf in Bulgaria?

Bulgaria's best golf is concentrated on the Black Sea coast near Kavarna, where three world-class courses sit within 20 minutes of each other: Thracian Cliffs, Cape Kaliakra and BlackSeaRama. Thracian Cliffs consistently ranks among Europe's top courses — a dramatic clifftop links with Black Sea views that would look at home in Scotland. We recommend playing all three over a 5-7 night stay. Sofia also has excellent parkland golf if you prefer a city break combination.

Are flights included?

Our golf holidays are arranged ground-only — hotel, golf and transfers. You can add flights through us, and those flights are ATOL protected as part of your booking.

How do golf holidays with Golf Planet Holidays work?

Every trip is tailor-made. Tell us your group, dates and the destinations you fancy, and we build a personal itinerary — hotel, golf and transfers — around them. There are no fixed packages to squeeze into; we shape the whole break to suit how your group likes to play.

How much does a golf holiday cost?

It depends on the destination, hotel, dates and how many rounds you want, so every quote is built individually. Many breaks start in the mid-hundreds per person; winter-sun and long-haul trips cost more. Get a free, no-obligation quote and we'll confirm your figure.
