Golf in Western Algarve or Costa Del Sol? An Honest Comparison
Western Algarve By The Golf Planet Holidays Team · Golf-travel specialists since 1981 · Published 2 June 2026 At a glance Which is better for a golf trip, the Western Algarve or the Costa del Sol? Neither is simply better; they suit different golfers. The Western Algarve offers a tighter cluster of mature, pine-and-cork resort […]
Two of Europe’s most beloved golf coasts sit barely a border apart, yet they feel worlds away from one another. The Western Algarve unfolds in pine, cork and quiet Atlantic light, its courses clustered close enough to play a different one each morning without ever feeling rushed. The Costa del Sol stretches longer and louder, a sun-warmed ribbon of championship pedigree, marina glamour and choice that runs from Sotogrande’s hush to the sparkle of Puerto Banus.
So which is right for your golf trip? The honest answer is that it depends on the golfer, the group and the week you have in mind. Below we compare them fairly, on the golf, the courses, the season and the atmosphere, before tailoring whichever speaks to you into something entirely your own.
The golf and the courses, side by side
The Western Algarve’s great gift is concentration. Around Vilamoura, Carvoeiro and Portimao you’ll find a dense cluster of mature resort courses, threaded through umbrella pines and cork oaks and shaped over decades into something settled and characterful. Penina Golf Course at Portimao carries genuine heritage, while Morgado Golf & Country Club and the layouts at Amendoeira Golf Resort add length, variety and a touch of modern drama. The pleasure here is logistical as much as it is sporting: from a base such as Penina Hotel & Golf Resort or Dom Pedro Marina Boutique Hotel & Golf, you can play a different course each day with the shortest of transfers.
The Costa del Sol trades that density for range and pedigree. The coast earned its nickname, the Coast of Golf, honestly, and the corner around Sotogrande and Alcaidesa is where its reputation was made. With the Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol and SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort as elegant bases, and the polished test of La Quinta Golf and Country Club closer to Marbella, the choice is broader and the ceiling higher for accomplished golfers. Where the Algarve feels like one beautifully kept garden, the Costa del Sol feels like a whole region of golf laid end to end.
Season, weather and when to go
Both coasts enjoy the long, generous golf seasons that draw northern Europeans south, and on both the shoulder months are the quiet stars. In the Western Algarve, the Atlantic edge keeps things temperate and the fairways a shade greener; February through May and September through November are glorious, and winter golf is perfectly playable when home courses are sodden. The light here, soft and clear, is part of the charm.
The Costa del Sol shares that spring-and-autumn sweet spot with a slightly warmer, more Mediterranean disposition. High summer can be hot for serious golf on either coast, which is why we generally steer clients toward the shoulder seasons, when the courses are at their best and the days are long without being fierce. Whichever you choose, the timing of your trip is something we shape around your handicap ambitions and your appetite for warmth.
Where our specialists would stay in Western Algarve
Atmosphere and where you'll stay
This is where the two coasts diverge most. The Western Algarve is unhurried and golf-first: long lunches, buggy-to-bar ease, and resorts like the Hyatt Regency Vilamoura Algarve, Tivoli Carvoeiro and Dona Filipa Hotel at Vale do Lobo that reward a slower pace. Evenings are gentle, the marinas pretty rather than pulsing. It suits the group that wants the golf to be the holiday, framed by good food and quiet comfort.
The Costa del Sol is more cosmopolitan and more varied in mood. You can choose the refined seclusion of the Sotogrande estates or the energy of Marbella and Puerto Banus, with hotels such as the Hard Rock Hotel Marbella, Amare Beach Hotel and Barcelo Occidental Banus offering everything from glamour to family ease. It’s the better fit for groups who want their golf wrapped in nightlife, shopping and a livelier evening scene.
Which coast suits which golfer
Choose the Western Algarve if you want a focused, restful golf week with courses on your doorstep, mature pine-framed layouts and minimal driving between tees. It flatters mixed-ability groups, rewards those who’d rather play more and travel less, and carries a quiet, well-bred charm. Trips begin from £239 per person, the accessible start of a fully tailor-made week.
Choose the Costa del Sol if you want breadth, championship pedigree and a coast that can be as serene or as spirited as you like, with Marbella and Sotogrande as its two contrasting poles. Trips begin from £185 per person. And if you genuinely can’t decide, you needn’t: because we craft every itinerary by hand, we can combine the two into a single, contrasting golf journey, sequencing the courses, hotels and transfers so the week flows exactly as you’d want it to.

What our golfers say

Golf Planet Holidays is an excellent company for golfing holidays, they are friendly, very helpful and tremendously efficient. Just back from a very enjoyable time in Tavira, Portugal.
A big thank you again Simon for organising our latest trip, this time to Quinta Do Lago. Your recommendation to include Ombria was well worth it ,you might need a few spare balls but it is a great course in the making and worth a visit.…
Had an amazing week in Tavira at Maria Nova Hotel as suggested by Simon. Played 3 great courses and 1 absolutely amazing course – Monte Rei. Would highly recommend Golf Planet to arrange your trip. Transfers were good too.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Western Algarve or Costa del Sol easier to reach for UK and US golfers?
Both are well served by direct flights, the Algarve through Faro and the Costa del Sol through Malaga, each within an easy transfer of the resorts we use. The Algarve’s compact geography makes onward transfers shorter, while Malaga opens up the wider stretch from Marbella down to Sotogrande. We arrange every transfer as part of the tailor-made itinerary so arrival is seamless.
Which destination is better for a mixed group of abilities?
Both flatter mixed groups beautifully. The Western Algarve’s resort courses, from Vilamoura to Amendoeira, tend to be forgiving off the tee yet rewarding around the greens, ideal where abilities differ. The Costa del Sol offers a similar spread plus the sterner test of its championship corner near Sotogrande for the lower handicaps. We balance each day’s courses to the group so everyone enjoys their round.
Is my money protected when I book a tailor-made trip to either?
Yes. Golf Planet Holidays has arranged tailor-made golf since 1981, and every trip is fully protected: flight-inclusive holidays are ATOL Protected, and your money is held securely in trust with the PTS until you travel. You book a refined, expertly curated week with complete peace of mind, whichever coast you choose.
Can I combine the Western Algarve and the Costa del Sol in one trip?
You can, and a number of our clients do, pairing the relaxed pine-framed golf of the Algarve with the variety and buzz of Marbella and Puerto Banus. It makes for a richer, more contrasting golf journey, and because we tailor everything by hand we can sequence the courses, hotels and transfers so the two halves flow naturally.
