South Africa or Morocco for a golf trip — which is better? Neither is simply ‘better’; they suit different golfers. South Africa, played from the Cape around Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Hermanus and Somerset West, pairs world-class golf with vineyards, game reserves and dramatic coastline — ideal for a richer, longer holiday. Morocco, centred on Marrakech and Agadir, delivers warm-weather golf, short flights from the UK and a vivid culture, making it the easier escape for a focused golf week. Golf Planet Holidays tailors both.

Is the golf stronger in South Africa or Morocco? Both offer excellent golf, but in different registers. South Africa’s Cape gives you genuine variety and scenery — venues such as Fancourt and Erinvale Estate near Somerset West sit among the most celebrated in the country. Morocco’s strength is consistency and setting, with courses like Golf Tazegzout near Agadir and the resort golf of Mazagan near Casablanca offering reliable, manicured play in fine weather.

Which has the better weather and season? Morocco is the more dependable warm-weather choice, especially Agadir and Marrakech in the European autumn-to-spring window when UK courses are cold. South Africa’s Cape golf shines in the southern-hemisphere summer (roughly November to March), when the days are long and the vineyards at their best — a true counter-season escape from a British winter.

There are two ways to chase the sun with a set of clubs in the boot, and golfers ask us about both constantly. South Africa or Morocco? One answers with the Cape — vineyards rolling to the sea, game reserves an hour from the first tee, light that photographers travel for. The other answers with Marrakech and the Atlantic coast — short-haul warmth, mint tea after the round, a culture that arrives the moment you land.

This is an honest comparison, not a sales pitch. Both are wonderful; they simply suit different golfers and different moods. Below we weigh the golf, the courses, the season, the atmosphere and the kind of group each rewards — then, because we plan both, we help you choose the one that fits the trip you actually want.

The golf and the courses

South Africa’s Cape is, quite simply, one of golf’s great regions for variety. Around Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Hermanus and Somerset West you move between parkland, coastline and mountain backdrops, with celebrated venues such as Fancourt and Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa near Somerset West anchoring an itinerary. The reward is a sense of journey — no two days, or two views, feel the same, and the golf is genuinely testing.

Morocco plays a different, more consistent hand. Centred on Marrakech and Agadir, its courses are immaculately presented and set against palm groves and the Atlas foothills. Golf Tazegzout above Agadir offers cliff-top drama, while Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort near Casablanca brings polished resort golf by the sea. For a focused week of reliable, beautifully kept golf in warmth, Morocco is hard to fault.

Season and weather — when each is at its best

This is where the two diverge most usefully. Morocco is the natural choice when British courses are cold: Marrakech and Agadir hold comfortable, playable warmth through the European autumn, winter and spring, which is precisely when most UK golfers want to escape. The flights are short, the time difference negligible, and a long weekend of golf is entirely realistic.

South Africa rewards the counter-season traveller. Its Cape golf is at its finest in the southern-hemisphere summer — broadly November to March — when the days stretch long, the vineyards around Stellenbosch are in full leaf, and the coastline at Hermanus and Camps Bay is at its most beautiful. It asks more of you in flight time and commitment, and gives a great deal more holiday in return.

Where our specialists would stay in South Africa

Atmosphere and sense of place

Off the course, these are two very different worlds. South Africa is the connoisseur’s holiday: wine estates at Spier near Stellenbosch and The Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town, whale-watching from Hermanus at the right time of year, and the extraordinary option of a safari finish at Gondwana Game Reserve. Base yourself coastally at The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay or The Farmhouse Hotel at Langebaan and the golf becomes one thread in a much larger tapestry.

Morocco delivers its sense of place instantly and vividly. Marrakech is all souks, riads and rooftop dinners — stay somewhere like the Fairmont Royal Palm or the Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi and the city’s energy is yours between rounds. Agadir, with the Hyatt Place Taghazout Bay nearby, trades the bustle for Atlantic beaches and a gentler rhythm. It is exotic, warm and wonderfully easy.

Which suits which golfer or group

Choose South Africa if you want a richer, longer trip and you have the time to do it justice — couples who pair golf with wine and wildlife, friends building a once-a-decade tour, or a society that wants Fancourt and a Gondwana safari in the same fortnight. The Cape rewards curiosity and a sense of occasion, and its hotels, from Erinvale Estate near Somerset West to Willowbrook Country House, are part of the pleasure.

Choose Morocco if you want warmth without the long haul — a focused golf week or buying-club break, a group chasing winter sun, or first-time overseas golfers who like the comfort of short flights and resort ease. Marrakech and Agadir give you vivid culture, dependable conditions and unfussy logistics. And because we tailor both, the honest answer is often: do South Africa for the grand tour, and keep Morocco for the easy winter escape.

Frequently asked questions

Is South Africa too far for a golf holiday?

It is a longer-haul trip than Morocco, with an overnight flight from the UK, but the time difference is minimal and the reward is exceptional. For a week or, better, a fortnight that combines Cape golf with wine country and a Gondwana safari, the distance is well worth it. For a short escape, Morocco’s two-to-three-hour flights make more sense.

Which is better value for a tailor-made trip?

Both can be shaped to your budget. South African golf trips begin from £125pp and Morocco from £378pp as the accessible starting point for a fully tailored holiday; where the value lies depends on season, hotels and how much you weave in beyond the golf. We price every trip transparently around what you actually want.

Are these trips financially protected?

Yes. Golf Planet Holidays has arranged tailor-made golf since 1981, we are ATOL Protected on trips including flights, and your money is held securely in trust with PTS until you travel. You book either destination with complete peace of mind.

Can we combine golf with non-golfing partners?

Absolutely, and both destinations excel here. In South Africa, partners enjoy the wine estates around Stellenbosch, whale season at Hermanus and safari at Gondwana. In Morocco, Marrakech’s souks, spas and rooftop dining — from the Fairmont Royal Palm to Le Naoura — keep non-golfers richly occupied while you play.
