Golf in Morocco or Western Algarve? An Honest Comparison

Two destinations, a short hop apart across the same sun-warmed latitude, and yet a world of difference between them. The Western Algarve is the familiar friend — mature pine-fringed fairways, a polished resort culture refined over half a century, and golf so concentrated you could play a different championship course each morning without ever moving hotel. Morocco is the road less travelled: lush oasis courses set against the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, Atlantic clifftops near Agadir, and the unhurried warmth of a country that turns a golf week into something closer to an expedition.
Choosing between them isn’t about better or worse — it’s about the kind of week you’re after. Below, we compare the two honestly, fairway for fairway, so you can picture which one belongs on your calendar. And because we tailor trips to both, the right answer is simply whichever stirs you most.
The golf and the courses
On pedigree and density, the Western Algarve sets the standard. Within a short drive of one another sit some of Iberia’s most storied layouts — Sir Henry Cotton’s Penina Golf Course at the Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, the muscular championship test of Morgado Golf & Country Club, and the broad, strategic fairways of Amendoeira Golf Resort. Base yourself in Vilamoura at the Hyatt Regency Vilamoura Algarve or the Dom Pedro Marina Boutique Hotel & Golf, and a week of varied, walkable, tree-lined golf falls effortlessly into place. This is parkland golf at its most mature and most convenient.
Morocco answers with drama rather than density. The courses around Marrakech — reached from the Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi or the Fairmont Royal Palm — are emerald oases of palm and water framed by the Atlas Mountains, while Golf Tazegzout near Agadir tumbles along clifftops above the Atlantic. There are fewer courses within easy reach, and transfers can run longer, but each round carries a sense of occasion the Algarve, for all its quality, rarely matches.
Season, weather and when to go
Both destinations are essentially year-round, but their sweet spots differ. The Western Algarve is at its most glorious from March to June and again through the golden autumn of September to November, when warm, settled days and firm fairways make for the finest golf. High summer brings heat and crowds; deep winter is mild and playable but cooler underfoot. It is, in short, a dependable companion in every season.
Morocco’s calendar leans the other way. Inland Marrakech is sublime from October to April — clear, comfortable golfing weather while northern Europe shivers — but can turn fierce in midsummer. The Atlantic coast at Agadir and Taghazout, home to the Hyatt Place Taghazout Bay, stays temperate almost the year round, cooled by sea breezes. For a winter-sun golf escape when the Algarve has cooled, Morocco comes into its own.
Where our specialists would stay in Morocco
Atmosphere and sense of place
The Western Algarve is golf woven seamlessly into a relaxed resort rhythm: marina dinners in Vilamoura, the genteel calm of Vale do Lobo around the Dona Filipa Hotel, the cliff-top charm of Carvoeiro at the Tivoli Carvoeiro. Everything is easy, comfortable and pleasingly predictable — a place where the golf is the centrepiece and the rest simply works.
Morocco offers something more sensory and more surprising. Days on the fairway give way to the colour and clamour of the Marrakech medina, riad courtyards and mint tea, the spice and ceremony of a culture that feels genuinely far from home — whether you stay at the Hotel & Ryads Barrière Le Naoura in the city or the coastal Mazagan Beach & Golf Resort near Casablanca. The golf is excellent; the destination is unforgettable.
Which suits which golfer or group
Choose the Western Algarve if you want maximum golf with minimum friction — a society or group of friends keen to play several celebrated courses in a week, short transfers between tee times, and the reassurance of a well-oiled resort scene. From the Crowne Plaza Vilamoura or the Vila Galé Ampalius, you can build a tightly packed, high-quality golf itinerary that simply flows.
Choose Morocco if you want the golf to be part of a larger adventure — couples and discerning travellers who relish atmosphere, winter warmth and somewhere that feels like a discovery. From the Pickalbatros Hotel du Golf Marrakech Palmeraie or the Tikida Golf Palace in Agadir, the days balance fine golf with a destination that lingers in the memory long after. Of course, both can be shaped to your group precisely — that is what tailor-made golf is for.

Frequently asked questions
Is Morocco or the Western Algarve easier to reach from the UK?
The Western Algarve has the edge on convenience, with short flights into Faro placing you minutes from courses in Vilamoura, Portimão and Vale do Lobo. Morocco asks a little more travel time into Marrakech, Agadir or Casablanca, but rewards it with a genuine change of scene. We arrange the flights and private transfers for both as part of your tailor-made itinerary.
When is the best time to play golf in each destination?
The Western Algarve shines in spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November), with warm, settled golfing weather. Morocco is at its finest from October to April inland around Marrakech, while the Agadir coast stays temperate year-round — making Morocco an outstanding choice for winter-sun golf when the Algarve cools.
Are my money and travel arrangements protected?
Yes. Golf Planet Holidays has arranged tailor-made golf since 1981. Your trip is ATOL Protected, and your money is held securely in trust with PTS until you travel, so you can book either destination with complete peace of mind.
Can we combine both destinations or mix courses and resorts?
Absolutely. Every itinerary is built around you — whether that means several courses across the Western Algarve, a winter week in Marrakech and Agadir, or a longer journey taking in both. Your specialist will pair the right hotels, tee times and transfers to suit your group, your golf and your pace.
