Is Mauritius or South Africa better for a golf trip? Neither is simply better — they answer different briefs. Mauritius is the indulgent island escape: a small cluster of immaculate resort courses such as Tamarina Golf Club, Anahita and the Links and Legend courses at Belle Mare Plage, all framed by lagoon and mountain, with golf woven into a barefoot-luxury holiday. South Africa is the golfer’s golfing destination: more courses, more variety and genuine championship pedigree at the likes of Fancourt and Erinvale, set against the Cape, the Winelands and the bush. Choose Mauritius for romance and ease; South Africa for depth of golf and breadth of experience.

Which has the better golf courses, Mauritius or South Africa? For sheer volume and championship credentials, South Africa leads — Fancourt and Erinvale Estate are serious, tournament-grade tests, and the Cape region alone offers a lifetime of golf. Mauritius counters with quality over quantity: Anahita Golf Course and Tamarina are world-class in their own right, and few settings on earth rival playing beside the Indian Ocean. If you want to play a different great course every day, South Africa wins; if you want a handful of exquisite courses and an unforgettable resort, Mauritius is hard to beat.

When is the best time to play golf in Mauritius versus South Africa? Mauritius plays year-round, with its most comfortable golfing months from May to November when the humidity eases and skies are bright; December to April is warmer and greener but can bring tropical showers. The Cape of South Africa is at its glorious best from October to April — long, dry, sunlit summer days ideal for golf, the Winelands and the coast — while the European summer brings the Cape’s cooler, wetter winter. As a rule, the two destinations’ prime seasons sit opposite one another, which is useful when planning the year.

Two of the southern hemisphere’s most seductive golf destinations, and a question we’re asked almost weekly: Mauritius or South Africa? Both reward the discerning golfer richly, yet they offer entirely different days — one a sun-warmed island where the golf drifts between lagoon and mountain, the other a vast, varied land where championship fairways give way to vineyards and game reserves.

The honest answer is that the right choice depends entirely on the trip you’re dreaming of. So rather than crown a winner, we’ve set the two side by side — the courses, the seasons, the feel of the place — to help you understand which suits your golf, your group and your sense of occasion. We tailor trips to both, and we love them for very different reasons.

The golf and the courses

South Africa is, unapologetically, a golfer’s country. The Cape and the Garden Route hold a remarkable concentration of fine courses, and at the top sit names with genuine championship pedigree — Fancourt, long regarded as one of the finest golf addresses in the southern hemisphere, and Erinvale Estate near Somerset West, a course with real tournament heritage beneath the Helderberg mountains. The pleasure here is range: you can play a different, memorable course almost every day and never repeat yourself.

Mauritius takes the opposite approach, and does it beautifully. This is quality distilled rather than spread — a small, polished collection of resort courses where every hole seems to borrow from the ocean. Anahita Golf Course and the neighbouring Bay Club, Tamarina Golf Club beneath the mountains, and the celebrated Links and Legend courses at Constance Belle Mare Plage, together with Le Chateau and La Reserve at Heritage Resort, give you a handful of exquisite rounds rather than an endless list. For many golfers, playing beside the Indian Ocean is worth more than playing somewhere new each morning.

Season, weather and the feel of the day

The two destinations are, conveniently, almost mirror images through the year. Mauritius is at its most comfortable for golf from around May to November, when the humidity softens and the light turns crisp; the December-to-April months are warmer, lusher and capable of a dramatic tropical shower that clears as quickly as it arrives. The Cape, by contrast, peaks from October to April — long, dry, golden summer days made for early tee times and unhurried afternoons in the Winelands.

The atmosphere differs just as much as the climate. A Mauritius golf day is languid and barefoot — a round, a long lunch, the lagoon, perhaps a spa treatment as the heat builds. A South African day is more expansive and active: golf in the morning, a wine estate at Stellenbosch in the afternoon, or a drive out to the bush. One invites you to slow down; the other invites you to explore.

Where our specialists would stay in Mauritius

Where you'll stay, and how it shapes the trip

In Mauritius the resort is the trip. You settle into one exceptional address and let the days unfold around it — Heritage Awali, Heritage Le Telfair, Constance Belle Mare Plage or the Tamarina Golf and Spa Resort — with the course, the beach and the dining all within the same gated world. It’s golf as part of a seamless, indulgent whole, which makes it especially well suited to couples and to golfers travelling with non-golfing partners.

South Africa rewards movement. A classic trip threads several distinctive stays together: The Vineyard or The Bay Hotel in and around Cape Town, the Spier Hotel among the Stellenbosch vines, Erinvale Estate Hotel and Spa for golf at Somerset West, perhaps Gondwana Game Reserve for a safari finale, or the coastal calm of The Farmhouse at Langebaan and Harbour House at Hermanus. The variety is the point — and it makes South Africa a natural fit for golf groups and buddies’ tours, including our Hosted Tours for 2026.

So — which is right for you?

Choose Mauritius if you want romance, ease and a sense of arrival: a small number of beautiful courses, one glorious resort, and golf folded gently into an island holiday. It’s ideal for couples, for special occasions, and for golfers who want their playing partner to be just as happy by the pool as on the tee.

Choose South Africa if golf is the headline and you want depth — more courses, championship tests at Fancourt and Erinvale, and the freedom to pair the fairways with wine, coast and wildlife. It suits keen golfers, groups and anyone who likes a trip with movement and discovery built in. And if you genuinely can’t decide, that’s no bad place to be — both are exceptional, and a specialist can shape either one precisely around the way you like to travel.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mauritius or South Africa more suited to a non-golfing partner?

Mauritius, generally. Because the golf, beach, spa and dining sit within a single resort such as Heritage Le Telfair or Constance Belle Mare Plage, a non-golfing partner is wonderfully looked after while you play. South Africa works beautifully too, but tends to suit couples who both enjoy exploring — wine estates at Stellenbosch, the Cape coast and the bush all add up to a more active holiday.

Which destination is better for a golf group or buddies' tour?

South Africa is the more natural choice for a group. The wealth of courses across the Cape and Garden Route — Fancourt, Erinvale and more — lets you play somewhere different each day, and stays such as the Spier Hotel and Erinvale Estate Hotel and Spa accommodate groups easily. Our Hosted Tours for 2026 are designed precisely for this. Mauritius can absolutely host a group, but shines brightest for couples and smaller parties.

How much does a tailor-made golf trip to Mauritius or South Africa cost?

Both are tailored entirely to you, so the figure reflects the courses, the season and the standard of stay you choose. As a guide, Mauritius trips start from £649pp and South Africa from £125pp, and from there a specialist builds the trip around your dates, your golf and your sense of occasion. Your money is fully protected: we are ATOL Protected, and your funds are held securely in trust with the PTS until you travel.

Can I combine Mauritius and South Africa in one trip?

Yes, and it’s a glorious pairing. Many of our clients open in South Africa — golf at the Cape, the Winelands, perhaps a safari at Gondwana — then fly on to Mauritius to unwind beside the Indian Ocean with a few rounds at Anahita or Tamarina. It’s a longer, more considered journey, and exactly the kind of trip a specialist is best placed to orchestrate seamlessly.
