Golf in Mallorca or Costa Del Sol? An Honest Comparison

Ask two golfers where to play in southern Spain and you will often start an argument that lasts until the second glass of Rioja. The Costa del Sol and Mallorca are both warm, generous and endlessly playable, yet they offer quite different kinds of golfing escape, and the right answer depends entirely on the kind of trip you are dreaming of.
This is an honest comparison, written to help rather than to sell. We have arranged tailor-made trips to both for years, and we love each for distinct reasons. Below we weigh the golf, the courses, the season, the atmosphere and the groups each suits best, so you can choose with clear eyes, and then we will shape the details around you.
The golf and the courses, side by side
The Costa del Sol has earned its nickname, the Costa del Golf, through sheer concentration. A single coastal corridor strings together a remarkable density of courses, which is why golfers gravitate to bases such as Marbella, Estepona, Puerto Banus and, further west, Sotogrande and Alcaidesa. Stay at the Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol, the SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort or La Quinta Golf and Country Club in Marbella and you can build a week of varied, contrasting rounds with short transfers between them, which is part of the region’s enduring appeal for golf societies.
Mallorca plays a different hand. The island’s golf is more spread out and, in truth, more about quality of experience than quantity of options. Pula Golf Resort near Son Servera is the natural anchor for a golfing stay in the east, while the Son Vida hillside above Palma, home to the Castillo Hotel Son Vida and the Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel, gives you elevated, pine-clad golf within easy reach of the capital. You will play fewer courses than on the Costa del Sol, but each round feels like part of an island escape rather than a procession.
Season, weather and condition
If reliability through the colder months matters most, the Costa del Sol has the edge. Its sheltered Andalusian coast holds mild, playable temperatures deep into winter, which is precisely why it fills with golfers when northern courses are waterlogged or frozen. Spring and autumn are glorious; high summer is hot enough to make an early tee time and a long lunch the civilised way to play.
Mallorca is gloriously seasonal. The island is at its most beautiful in spring, from April to June, and again in September and October, when the light softens, the countryside is green and fragrant, and the courses are quieter and in fine condition. It can be played outside those windows, but the island rewards those who come when it is at its best, which is part of why a Mallorca trip feels like a considered choice rather than a default.
Where our specialists would stay in Mallorca
Atmosphere and sense of place
This is where the two truly diverge. The Costa del Sol is sociable, polished and full of energy. Puerto Banus and Marbella bring marina glamour, excellent restaurants and lively evenings, with hotels such as the Amare Beach Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel Marbella, the Barcelo Occidental Banus in Puerto Banus and the Hotel Exe Estepona Thalasso & Spa keeping you close to the buzz. Sotogrande, by contrast, offers a quieter, more refined corner for those who want polish without the pace, with the Hotel Encinar de Sotogrande as a gentler base.
Mallorca trades buzz for serenity and a deeper sense of escape. From the Steigenberger Golf & Spa Resort at Camp de Mar to Pure Salt Port Adriano in Calvia, the Son Caliu Spa Oasis Hotel and the elegant Son Vida hotels above Palma, the mood is calmer and more intimate. The island’s coves, mountains, old town and harbours give a trip texture beyond the golf, which is why it suits couples and mixed golf-and-leisure groups so naturally.
Which destination is right for your group
Choose the Costa del Sol if you are travelling as a society or a larger group, want several contrasting rounds with minimal transfer time, and like your evenings with a little life in them. It is the more practical, more sociable, more dependable winter option, and it carries a group itinerary beautifully, whether you base yourselves around Marbella, Fuengirola at the Barcelo Occidental Fuengirola, or the quieter calm of Sotogrande and Alcaidesa.
Choose Mallorca if you are a couple, a mixed party or a group that values scenery, intimacy and a slower island rhythm as much as the golf itself. It is the more romantic and characterful of the two, ideal for blending memorable rounds with the pleasures of the island. Both are superb; the honest answer is simply which trip you want, and that is exactly the conversation we are here to have, shaping every detail of either around you.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Costa del Sol or Mallorca better for a winter golf trip?
The Costa del Sol is the more dependable winter choice. Its sheltered Andalusian coast holds mild playing temperatures through the colder months, which is why it draws golfers from across Europe when home courses are out of action. Mallorca is best enjoyed in spring and autumn; we will guide you to the right window for whichever you choose.
Which is easier for a larger golf group or society?
The Costa del Sol, generally. The density of courses along one coastline means several contrasting rounds with short transfers, plus plenty of lively dining and evening options around Marbella and Puerto Banus. Mallorca works wonderfully for groups too, but tends to suit smaller, more relaxed parties who value scenery and a slower pace.
Are both destinations financially protected when I book?
Yes. Golf Planet Holidays has arranged tailor-made golf trips since 1981, and your trip is ATOL protected with your money held securely in trust through PTS until you travel, so you can plan either destination with complete confidence.
Can you combine the two, or tailor a trip entirely around our group?
Every trip we arrange is tailor-made, so the itinerary, hotels, courses and pace are shaped entirely around your group rather than fixed to a package. We will recommend the destination that best fits how you like to play and unwind, and build the whole trip around that.
