Golf in Lisbon Coast or Western Algarve? An Honest Comparison
Lisbon Coast By The Golf Planet Holidays Team · Golf-travel specialists since 1981 · Published 2 June 2026 At a glance Which is better for golf, the Lisbon Coast or the Western Algarve? Neither is simply ‘better’ — they suit different golfers. The Lisbon Coast, around Cascais and Estoril, is about quality over quantity: the […]
Portugal is the spiritual home of European golf, yet ask any seasoned golfer where to play and you’ll get two answers. Some swear by the Lisbon Coast — the wind-brushed dunes of Cascais and Estoril, where Atlantic links rub shoulders with palace hotels and pastel old towns. Others won’t be moved from the Western Algarve, where course after course unfolds in the warm light around Vilamoura, Portimao and Vale do Lobo.
Both are wonderful. But they reward different golfers, different groups and different times of year — and the honest answer to ‘which one’ depends entirely on what you want from the week. Here is our specialist’s even-handed comparison, drawn from years of arranging tailor-made trips to both.
The golf and the courses
The Lisbon Coast trades on quality and drama. Its crown jewel is Oitavos Dunes, a links-style course threaded through umbrella pines and rolling sand that consistently ranks among the finest in Europe — a serious, natural test that stays with you long after the round. Nearby, the Quinta da Marinha courses and the cliff-top Praia D’El Rey at the Marriott Golf and Beach Resort add genuine variety, all within a compact, easily managed area.
The Western Algarve plays a different game — one of depth. Here you can play a fresh course every day without repeating yourself: Sir Henry Cotton’s classic Penina at Portimao, the rugged Morgado, the modern and generous Amendoeira at Alcantarilha, and the well-loved Dom Pedro and Vilamoura courses. No single course shouts as loudly as Oitavos, but the sheer concentration of good golf within a short drive is unmatched, and it’s why the region has anchored Portuguese golf for decades.
Season, weather and the feel of the place
If timing matters, this is where the two part ways most clearly. The Western Algarve sits further south and more sheltered, holding warmth and calm well into winter — October to March is its quiet golden season, when fairways are emptier and the light is soft. It is the natural choice for a dependable cool-weather golf break.
The Lisbon Coast is more exposed to the Atlantic, which is both its character and its caveat. The wind that shapes Oitavos into a proper links test can stiffen a winter round; spring and autumn are its sweet spots, when the courses are at their best and the resort towns of Cascais and Estoril are unhurried and elegant. In atmosphere, the Lisbon Coast feels more cosmopolitan and cultured — palace hotels, Sintra, the sea — while the Western Algarve feels more purely a golfer’s region, relaxed and sun-soaked, built around the game.
Where our specialists would stay in Lisbon Coast
Which golfer or group does each suit?
Choose the Lisbon Coast if you want a refined week with a strong sense of place — a marquee round or two at Oitavos and Praia D’El Rey, set against grand hotels such as the Hotel Palacio Estoril, the Grande Real Villa Italia or the cliff-side Albatroz in Cascais. It suits couples, golfing partners who also value culture and dining, and groups who’d rather play a handful of memorable courses than chase volume. It’s also the easier short-break option, close to Lisbon’s airport.
Choose the Western Algarve if golf is the headline and you want to fill the week with it — a buggy society or a fourball happiest moving from Penina to Morgado to Amendoeira to Vilamoura, basing themselves at a hub like the Hyatt Regency Vilamoura, the Tivoli Carvoeiro or the storied Penina and Dona Filipa hotels. It’s made for the dedicated golf week, the larger group, and anyone wanting reliable warmth out of season.
Or have both — tailored to you
Because these are tailor-made trips, you’re never forced to choose on principle. Many of our clients twin the two — a couple of refined days on the Lisbon Coast around Oitavos and Cascais, then south to the Algarve for a fuller run of golf — or simply lean their week toward whichever suits their handicap, their group and the season they’re travelling in. We’ll match courses to your standard, hotels to your taste, and tee times to your pace, then handle every transfer in between.

Frequently asked questions
Can I combine the Lisbon Coast and the Western Algarve in one trip?
Yes — and many of our clients do. A tailor-made itinerary can pair a refined few days around Cascais and Oitavos Dunes with a fuller stretch of golf in the Algarve, with all transfers and tee times arranged so the two halves flow seamlessly. We’ll balance the days to suit your group’s pace and handicap.
When is the best time of year to play each destination?
The Western Algarve is at its most rewarding from October through March, warm and sheltered for cool-season golf. The Lisbon Coast is finest in spring and autumn, when the courses are in peak condition and the Atlantic wind is at its kindest. We’ll advise on timing as part of planning your trip.
Is my trip financially protected when I book with Golf Planet Holidays?
Yes. Golf Planet Holidays has been arranging golf travel since 1981, we are ATOL Protected on trips including flights, and your money is held securely in trust with PTS until you travel — so your bespoke Portugal golf holiday is safeguarded from the moment you book.
Which destination is better for a larger golf society or group?
The Western Algarve, with its density of courses around Vilamoura, Portimao and Vale do Lobo, is the natural home for a dedicated golf week with a larger group — a fresh course each day within easy reach of your hotel. The Lisbon Coast suits smaller groups wanting a more refined, culture-rich few days. We tailor both to the size and style of your party.
