Costa Del Sol

There is a reason this stretch of southern Spain answers to two names. To the rest of the world it is the Costa del Sol; to golfers it has long been the Costa del Golf, a ribbon of coastline where the Mediterranean glitters on one side, the Sierra Blanca rises on the other, and manicured fairways thread between the two. Few destinations in Europe let you play this well for this much of the year.

But the coast has its rhythms, and knowing them is the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one. The light, the temperature, the firmness of the turf and the length of the tee-sheet all shift with the seasons. This guide walks you through the golfing year month by month, so you can choose the window that suits your game, your pace and your sense of occasion.

Spring (March to May): the connoisseur's season

For many, this is the Costa del Sol at its absolute best. The winter rains have greened the hillsides, the wildflowers are out along the fairways, and daytime temperatures settle into a glorious 20-25C, warm enough for shirtsleeves, cool enough to play eighteen without flagging. The courses come into peak condition as the growing season returns, greens running true and surrounds lush.

It is a wonderful time to base yourself in Sotogrande, where SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort or the more intimate Hotel Encinar de Sotogrande put you within easy reach of Alcaidesa, with its sea-facing holes, and Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol just along the coast. Book a little ahead, however, as spring is no secret and the better tee times are claimed early.

Summer (June to August): early tee times and long evenings

High summer brings reliable sunshine and that unmistakable holiday buzz to the coast, but it also brings heat, frequently into the low-to-mid 30s by midday. The seasoned approach is simple: tee off early, when the air is fresh and the greens hold a little dew, then retreat to the pool, the spa or a long Mediterranean lunch as the sun climbs.

It suits families and those pairing golf with beach days especially well. A resort base such as Amare Beach Hotel in Marbella, Hard Rock Hotel Marbella or Barcelo Occidental Fuengirola lets non-golfers drift to the sand while you play your dawn round, then everyone reconvenes for the famously long, balmy Andalusian evenings.

Autumn (late September to November): the quiet sweet spot

If spring is the connoisseur’s season, autumn is its equal and often a touch quieter. The fierce summer heat softens back into the mid-20s, the sea is still warm from months of sun, and the crowds of August have thinned. The courses, well rested and watered through the season, are in handsome shape, and the light takes on that golden, low-angled quality photographers love.

This is a fine moment for a Marbella stay, perhaps Hotel Lima, Marbella for its central charm or Barcelo Occidental Banus in Puerto Banus, with La Quinta Golf and Country Club a short transfer inland. Estepona, too, comes into its own; Hotel Exe Estepona Thalasso & Spa pairs unhurried golf with the kind of spa afternoons the shoulder season was made for.

Winter (December to February): Europe's mild-weather escape

While the rest of Europe scrapes frost from the windscreen, the Costa del Sol plays on. Winters here are mild and frequently sunny, with daytime temperatures often in the high teens, comfortable golfing weather under a bright Andalusian sky. Yes, the days are shorter and a fresh morning may call for a sweater on the first tee, but the courses stay green, open and welcoming.

It is the most peaceful time to travel and a genuine tonic for the winter-weary golfer. A comfortable, well-placed base such as Barcelo Occidental Fuengirola or Hotel Exe Estepona Thalasso & Spa lets you string together rounds across the coast at an unhurried pace, with the spa waiting at the end of each day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single best month to play golf on the Costa del Sol?

It is hard to better April or October. Both sit squarely in the shoulder seasons, with warm but comfortable temperatures, courses in peak condition and tee-sheets noticeably calmer than the summer peak. They reward unhurried, multi-round trips beautifully.

How hot does it get in summer, and can you still play?

Midsummer days frequently reach the low-to-mid 30s. Golf is absolutely still on the cards, but the wise play is an early tee time, generous hydration and an afternoon by the pool. A resort base near the beach makes the warmer months a pleasure rather than an endurance.

Is it worth travelling for golf in winter?

Very much so. With around 320 days of sunshine a year and mild winters, the Costa del Sol is one of Europe’s most dependable cold-season golf escapes. Courses stay green and playable, and the coast is at its most peaceful, perfect for a restorative few days.

Is my trip financially protected?

Yes. Golf Planet Holidays has been crafting tailor-made golf travel since 1981 and is ATOL Protected, and your money is held securely in trust with the PTS until you travel. It means you can plan your Costa del Sol golf with complete peace of mind.
