Vilnius is not the first name a UK club golfer reaches for, and that is rather the point. The old town is one of the largest surviving in this part of Europe, 352 hectares of Gothic, Renaissance and baroque streets that UNESCO listed in 1994. The golf sits just outside it. Two full eighteens, both quiet, both good value, both played under midsummer light that runs past seventeen hours a day.

Why play golf in Vilnius
Genuinely quiet golf. Lithuania has a handful of courses and nothing like the visitor traffic of the Algarve or Andalucia, so tee sheets stay open and rounds move at a civilised pace.
Midsummer daylight of a kind you cannot get at home: 17 hours and 21 minutes at the solstice, sunrise at 4.38am, sunset at 9.59pm. A second nine after dinner is entirely normal.
Money goes further. Restaurant prices in Lithuania run around a quarter below UK levels, which shows up over four nights of eating well.
A capital that would justify the flight on its own. Seven hundred years of it, and an old town small enough to cross on foot.
Short hop. A little under three hours in the air from London, and Vilnius Airport is 5.9 kilometres from the centre.

The courses you’ll play
[The V Club](/product/the-v-club/) is the more convenient of the two, since it lies on the grounds of the hotel we use. Par 72, 6,312 metres, opened in the autumn of 2009 and signed off in 2019 as a venue for the EGA European Team Amateur men's and women's championships, which is a fair signal of how it is kept. It runs through pine and birch with water doing most of the defending. [European Centre Golf Club](/product/european-centre-golf-club/) is the other, 26 kilometres north of the city at Girijos on the Moletu road, laid out over more than 83 hectares around Lake Girija. Par 71 and 6,600 metres off the back, so the longer test of the pair, with natural ponds and channels threaded through it. Two courses is two courses. Play both twice across four nights and you will actually know them, which is rarely true of a seven-course itinerary.
Where you’ll stay
One hotel here, and happily it is the right one. Vilnius Grand Resort sits at Ezeraiciu on 280 hectares of lake and forest, twenty minutes' drive from the old town, with the V Club's first tee on the same estate. Rooms look out over water or trees. The V Spa runs a full sauna circuit, an adults-only vitality pool and salt and aroma therapy rooms, which earns its keep when the round finishes at nine in the evening and nobody fancies driving anywhere. Restaurants cover French, Italian and an Asian grill. There is a private beach on the lake with boats and water bikes, and tennis courts if anything needs settling. Best time to play golf in Vilnius
Here is the caveat, and it is a real one. Golf in Lithuania is a summer proposition and nothing else. The season runs roughly April to October, with the European Centre course usually opening in the second week of April, and the dependable stretch inside that is May to late September. December gives Vilnius seven hours and twenty-one minutes of daylight, which is not a golf day by any reading. June and July are the prize: 17 hours 21 minutes of light, average July highs of 23.8C, warm without being oppressive, though heatwaves push past 30C now and then. May and September are cooler and quieter, and the old town is better for it. Do not plan anything between November and March. There is nothing to plan.
A sense of Vilnius
History & heritage
The old town went onto the UNESCO list in 1994: 352 hectares, 112 quarters, a medieval street plan nobody ever straightened out, and enough churches to make the point that this was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the thirteenth century to the end of the eighteenth. Gothic, Renaissance, baroque, neoclassical and rococo all sit within a few streets of one another. Start at Gediminas Castle Tower for the view, then work down through the cathedral, St Anne's and the Bernardine complex, the university quadrangles and the Gate of Dawn. Then cross the Vilnia into Uzupis, sixty hectares of old workshops and studios that declared itself a republic on April Fools' Day 1998. Its 38-article constitution is fixed to a wall on Paupio street in twenty-three languages. One article grants a dog the right to be a dog.
Food & wine
Wine is not the story here. Lithuania's oldest drink is midus, a honey mead spiced with thyme, cinnamon or juniper, and the farmhouse brewing tradition turns up in chronicles from the eleventh century. Around eighty breweries work today, several making styles you will not find anywhere else in Europe, which is worth an evening of anyone's time. On the plate, cepelinai: potato dumplings stuffed with meat, mushroom or cheese and finished with spirgai, fried onion and bacon, and sour cream. In summer, saltibarsciai, a cold beetroot soup the colour of a dry rose, served with dill, cucumber, boiled egg and hot potatoes on the side. Kibinai are mutton pastries that came from the Karaite community at Trakai. Rye bread is on every table. Sakotis, the spiked wedding cake, is more architecture than pudding.
Beyond the fairways
Trakai first. The island castle stands in Lake Galve, begun in the fourteenth century by Kestutis and largely finished around 1409 by Vytautas the Great, and it now houses the Trakai History Museum. A short run west of the city, easily a half day. The second outing is stranger and rather better. In 1989 a scientist at France's Institut Geographique National calculated the geographic centre of Europe and landed on a spot at Girija, the same village as the European Centre course. A white granite monument went up there in 2004, in woodland that has been a protected reserve since 1992. About seventeen kilometres away sits Europos Parkas, an open-air sculpture museum whose exhibits include the largest sculpture in the world made of television sets. Lithuania takes its position on the map seriously, and then quietly does not.
Getting around & exploring
Hire a car. The distances are small but the two courses are not next door to each other, and taxis across four days with clubs get tiresome. Vilnius Airport is 5.9 kilometres south of the centre, so you are on the road within minutes of landing. The European Centre course is signposted at the 26 kilometre mark of the Moletu road, a straightforward run north on good tarmac. Vilnius Grand Resort is twenty minutes out from the old town. Roads in Lithuania are quiet and well surfaced, and the driving is on the right. If you would rather not drive at all, we can arrange private transfers for the airport and both courses, which suits groups who intend to give the mead a fair hearing.

Getting there
Vilnius Airport carries the code VNO and sits 5.9 kilometres south of the city, which is about as convenient as European airports get. Ryanair and Wizz Air fly direct from London Luton, Ryanair from London Stansted. Reckon on a little under three hours in the air. From most other UK airports you will connect through a hub, and that is worth factoring into a four-night trip. Our breaks are sold ground-only, so hotel, golf and transfers are what you buy from us. Is it easy to get to Lithuania from the UK?
Yes, there are regular flights from London Stansted, Luton and London City Aiport to the capital Vilnius.
What currency do I need in Lithuania?
Lithuania uses the euro (€), having joined the Eurozone in 2015. Major credit and debit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants and golf clubs in Vilnius and across the country. You won't need to carry large amounts of cash — contactless payment is widely used. We recommend informing your bank of your travel dates to avoid any card security blocks. ATMs are widely available throughout Vilnius and other major towns if you do need cash for smaller purchases.
What languages are spoken in Lithuania?
Lithuanian is the official language, but English is very widely spoken in Vilnius, particularly in hotels, golf clubs, restaurants and tourist areas. Lithuania has a young, internationally oriented population and you'll find communication easy throughout your stay. German is also spoken by some. At the golf courses we work with, staff are accustomed to English-speaking visitors and can assist with all aspects of your round. You'll have no difficulty whatsoever communicating during your golf holiday in Lithuania.
When is the best time of year to go to Lithuania?
